The health sector has an important role to play in helping to develop and implement strategies to preserve the climate and to build less polluted, healthy cities and green spaces. In addition to specific recommendations on air and water quality standards, the health sector can also offer mechanisms for measuring outcomes in other sectors, with well-established tools to analyze the impact on health outcomes of transport and land-use policies. An essential element in shaping urban health policy is ensuring the active and broad participation of the local population. In doing so, broad community participation in policy development and implementation at the national and local levels is essential for effective decision-making to guarantee the achievement of socially relevant health outcomes.
